What is the proper technique for collecting a throat specimen?

Throat specimen should be collected through the proper technique. The patient is required to tilt the head and to open the mouth widely. The technician in the lab should then press the tongue of the patient with a tongue depressor and examine the mouth and the throat. This is done to test out the presence of any visible sore or red area in the tongue region. After this, a clean swab is rubbed against the back of the patient’s throat. This is done over any noticeably inflamed area or sore area and also rubbed against the tonsils. Once done, this sample swab is placed in a cup in the midst of special substances called culture (Culture Test ForThroat, 2012) . This helps the growth of infectious organisms and the result of the test.

Why do you think the first test result came back as negative?

The first test result came back as negative because the specimen collection procedure was not followed properly. The swab touched the lips and tongue, but did not rub against the back of the throat, which is essential for the accurate specimen. Since the sample was not correct, the result of the test was inaccurate.

What organism is responsible for causing strep throat?

Strep throat is caused by the infection of bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. To be more precise, Group A SStreptococcus bacteria. It is a, nonmotile, gram-positive, nonsporeforming coccus and it takes place in chains of cells or in pairs of cells (Kenneth Todar, 2009).

What complications may have developed if you did not have another throat culture obtained and had been prescribed antibiotics?

If another throat culture would not have been done and antibiotics would not have been prescribed, it would have left the problem untreated. If antibiotics would not have been recommended the strep throat would have built up complications like, sinusitis, rheumatic fever, otitis media, tonsils infection, pharynx, or adenoids (South Dakota Department of Health).
