Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is a drug extracted from the cannabis plant. It is used as medicine and as a psychoactive drug. Marijuana is used by the majority of people as a recreational drug. Other people use it as medicine. It is the most commonplace illicit drug in the United States. Use, possession or sale of marijuana has legal restrictions in the U.S. When consumed, Marijuana has physiological and psychoactive effects. There is, however, not enough evidence to conclude on the risk of lifespan or death. Use of cannabis has actually been described by medical practitioners as less harmful compared to tobacco, alcohol or prescription drugs, as far as social harm, physical harm or addiction are concerned (Morgan, 2011).
Marijuana has several medicinal benefits. Medicinal marijuana is an effective and safe medicine for treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and other conditions. Marijuana is good when used in moderation. It has less health risks compared to such drugs as tobacco and alcohol, which are acceptable legally and morally in the society. The government spends double the amount of revenue that cigarette generate to cater for bills due to illnesses that result from cigarette smoking. A lot of money is also spent on footing bills due to accidents that are caused by drunk drivers. Marijuana, on the other hand, only generates income. People who are high on Marijuana can drive safely, and it has much less side effects compared to cigarettes. There have always been unfounded beliefs and claims that inhaling Marijuana causes cancer. This is untrue. In fact, Marijuana slows down the growth of tumors in the breasts, lungs and heart. This is unlike tobacco which causes cancer since its smoke gets radiated while Marijuana’s is not. Cannabis has also been known to be a muscle relaxant and has, therefore, been such an effective seizure treatment. There have been countless cases in which people suffering from seizures returned to normalcy after taking Marijuana.
Doctors from California have reported that since Marijuana was legalized in the state of California, they have been able to treat roughly 300,000 cases that could not be previously treated through conventional medicine. Treatment of glaucoma by use of Marijuana is heavily documented. Marijuana cures multiple sclerosis by stopping the muscle spasms and the neurological effects that result from the disease. Cannabis is an excellent alternative to Ritalin. It actually treats ADD and ADHD without the side effects that result when Ritalin is used to cure these disorders. The pharmacological properties of Marijuana have led to 36 states in the United States legalizing Marijuana for those people suffering from incurable diseases: AIDS, glaucoma and cancer. Research is still ongoing on the use of Marijuana to cure mental disorders and ease anxiety.
Cases of people dying from Marijuana overdose are yet to be seen unlike alcohol overdose, which claims over five thousand casualties annually. Marijuana is a drug with enormous economic, commercial and environmental benefits. ‘Weed’ also generates significant tax revenues and substantial public savings for the local government. Most students who smoke Marijuana have always come out as more creative in class, during debates and any arguments.
The negative effects of marijuana have been blown out of proportion over the years. Its effects are far less compared to the risks that it exposes the users to. This is because the benefits of Marijuana are not found in any other substances. Drugs that can cure the kind of disorders that Marijuana does are limited. Cancer, for instance, is seen by most people as an incurable disease, but Marijuana prevents it. Awareness is being created across the continents so as to save the revenue that comes from taxing marijuana.
Marijuana has been said to have harmful effects on brain function and memory. Marijuana is only dangerous if it is misused and overused, just like any other drug. It is actually magical when used in moderation. THC, the active Marijuana ingredient affects the cannabinoids receptors on nerve cells and affects their functioning. These cannabinoids are concentrated in some areas of the brain while, in other areas, they are scarce or absent. These receptors are said to be found in those areas of the brain that influence concentration, memory, thought, coordinated movement, time and sensory reception. Marijuana when taken with food could lead to the following effects: delusions, hallucinations, disorientation and impaired memory. Whether THC, marijuana’s active ingredient has medicinal value is the essential question. The benefits from THC by far outweigh the risks associated with it. Research also shows that THC has benefits that no other medicine has led to (Abel, 2008).
Cannabis has also been said to cause impairment of short-term memory during intoxication. Cannabis has a negative effect on memory and its chronic use might cause permanent impairment. The DEA opposition to marijuana is based on the premise that the medical value of Marijuana can be fulfilled by other drugs that are as effective on the market, and that Marijuana is highly addictive.
The pros of Cannabis far outweigh its cons. Marijuana is healthy for human consumption. It prevents AIDS and glaucoma among other disorders, which have always been said to be incurable. It also has economic value to a country through taxes. The reports that marijuana causes loss of memory are populist and unsubstantiated. As discussed above the benefits of Marijuana far outweigh the risks. The benefits range from medical to economic. Its use, though, should be regulated so that it is not abused, especially by children.
