Without any doubt, in the 21st century, the role of hospitals has significantly increased since environmental issues (green house effect, the “dead zones”, and global warming), economic decay, unemployment, and bad conditions of work and life have considerably impaired human health. Nowadays hospitals play an important role not only in providing effective treatment, but also they are responsible for the application of technologically developed means of medical equipment that considerably precipitate patients’ recovery. In this case, it is vital to determine the best hospitals that can ensure efficient medical care, professional approach, and upright human values. According to the statistical data of the US news best hospitals in 2012- 2013, it should be considered that the most qualitative hospitals are the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Indisputably, the MD Anderson Cancer Center belongs to the most respected healthcare centers in the world since it treats and prevents cancer on the highest medical level. This hospital has won the first rank during 11 years among American hospitals which provide effective cancer treatment. Historically, this hospital was created in 1941 as a fundamental part of the University of Texas system. The institution is located in central Huston. According to the National Cancer Act of 1971, the MD Anderson Cancer Center is considered to be the most comprehensive cancer hospital in the USA. This hospital is admitted to being the biggest freestanding cancer center in the world (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2012).

Undoubtedly, the major competitor of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution that was established in 1889 in Maryland by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The rise of this hospital has considerably changed the medical system in the USA since it applied the modern means of treatment of the patients’ diagnosing. Furthermore, the Johns Hopkins Hospital won the Nobel Prize in the field of genetics and gave birth to the genetic industry (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.).

It is evident that the main purpose of these hospitals is to provide professional, effective, rapid, and high-quality medical care in order to improve patients’ health. However, there are certain differences in their medical approaches. First of all, the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital are different in the field of medical direction. For instance, the main sphere of work at the MD Anderson Cancer Center is the provision of effective medical care for patients suffering from cancer. The medical staff has developed a new cancer care model. Undoubtedly, the MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the most developed NCI-designated cancer centers with its own Emergency Center, which promptly alleviates sharp pain that dramatically influences its patients. On the contrary, the central field of work of the Johns Hopkins is diabetes, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology, neurosurgery, and pulmonology.

The second apparent distinction amidst the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Johns Hopins Hospital is the field of application of medical tools and tests. At the MD Anderson, there are many different methods that help to identify various types of cancer and its stages. Moreover, these diagnostic tools can be classified according to two types such as mechanisms that help to identify cancer and mechanisms that are responsible for a certain type of cancer. In the MD Anderson Cancer Center, prime medical tools of obtaining professional patient’s diagnosis are biopsy, endoscopy, diagnostic imaging (X-rays, CAT scan, MRI, ultrasound, and blood tests). Furthermore, there are many innovative medical methods to diagnose cancer: chemotherapy options and targeted therapies for the patients suffering from ovarian cancer; molecular analysis of the patients who have carcinoid tumor; CT urogram, bone, PET, MRI, and CAT scans for bladder cancer diagnosis. Looking at this example, the MD Anderson Cancer Center is identified as the best cancer diagnostic hospital in the world that provides not only effective treatment for various types of cancer but also reliable and precise diagnosis of this serious illness. In comparison with the MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Johns Hopkins Hospital provides professional diagnosis not only for the patients who are suffering from cancer but also for those who have other serious diseases. Undoubtedly, this hospital is perceived to be the leader among other hospitals due to effective application of HIMS (Health Information Management Systems) in its laboratory services. The advantages of HIMS taking can be explained by the fact that these systems can provide quick diagnosis of the patient, his/ her former medical records, gathering of the vital information about the patient, and its adduction for further action, such as treatment. On the contrary, other hospitals that do not use appropriate HIMS in the process of diagnostication spend a lot of time to discern a disease, due to the scarcity of information and proper evidence of the illness.

The third explicit difference between the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital is the sphere of scientific research. On the one hand, the MD Anderson is deemed to be the most productive and professional hospital in the world that annually conducts different investigations aimed solely at cancer. According to statistics, this hospital has spent approximately $647 million on research in 2012. Moreover, this hospital supports 12 grants of NCI Specialized Programs of Research Excellence. Furthermore, the MD Anderson Cancer Center has launched a new Moon Shots Program in order to accelerate the pace of scientific discoveries, reduce cancer deaths, and provide new scientific approaches. The main purpose of this program is to fight against the eight most serious types of cancer such as breast cancer, leukemia, melanoma, lung cancer, and prostate cancer. Mr. DePinho, the president of the MD Anderson Cancer Center (2012), pointed out that the Moon Shots Program is a new developed medical approach that can be applied to the process of treatment of various illnesses, starting from all types of cancer to other chronic diseases. On the other hand, the Johns Hopkins Hospital is estimated as the most powerful medical research center in the process of finding effective treatment not only for cancer but also otther medical breakthroughs. For instance, at this hospital the vitamin D was invented. Moreover, the Hopkins hospital is the birthplace of the development of closed-chest heart massage, the first "blue baby" surgical operation, and discovery of the three types of polio virus which opened the way for modern heart surgery (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.).

Finally, the strategies of the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital are quite different, however, both of them are trying to provide the most effective and professional medical care. The MD Anderson Cancer Center has pointed out its strategic plan that includes seven fundamental steps, namely patient care, research, education, prevention, administration, collaboration, and resources. The first step is patient care that means the enhancement of leadership of the MD Anderson in research-driven patient care throughout every phase of the cancer care cycle. It is also aimed to provide the best facilities that will help to fight against cancer. The second step is research, the aim of which is to strengthen the quality of medical treatment and provide good scientific basis for further investigation. The third step is education that will help to train and recruit outstanding students that will support the career development in the world. The fourth step is prevention that means finding advanced technologies to assess the risk of cancer that will play an important role in the process of cancer prevention for future generations. The fifth step is administration which is vital due to effective provision for patients with professional medical care. The next two steps in the strategic plan are collaboration and resources that are fundamental levels since the improvement of administrative infrastructure and productive teamwork in local, national, and global level will help to advance medicine in general, exchange medical experience, and develop global medical collaboration (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2012). On the contrary, in 2008 the Johns Hopkins Hospital adopted a new strategic plan known as Diversity & Inclusion 2020 that includes the three main spheres, namely patient and community, workplace, and talent pipeline. Firstly, patient and community is a strategic aim which the Johns Hopkins Hospital is trying to reach by 2020 by applying new technological means to medical care in order to be the most trusted partner in the world. Secondly, in 2020 the Johns Hopkins Hospital will be the leader amidst other hospitals since it will have the most professional team. What is more, 90% of employees will consider the Johns Hopkins Hospital as the best place to work, to get an advanced training, and medical internship. Finally, the medical and non-medical staff from the Johns Hopkins Hospital will be the most qualified of the talent pool (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2008).

All in all, the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital are very competitive American hospitals since they provide the most effective medical care and treatment. Undoubtedly, these hospitals have some divergences in their medical approaches; however, they have a common aim to enhance the level of medical care not only in the local or national level but also on the global level.
