Economics

Free Essay Sample «Economics»

My intended major subject is economics. My interest in economics started when I took my first summer job. It is not just the job that made my interest arise, but rather my boss who became such an inspiration to me. He would always say that the ability of human beings is finite, but if we use resources effectively it is possible to create anything to infinity. I have carried these words from this great man in my heart and strived to live according to them. My boss, Mr. Kent, who everyone fondly referred to as Kenny, would repeatedly tell us the story of how he launched his company by effectively utilizing resources.

I have been fortunate to gather subsequent amount of experience in this field of economics in a number of ways. One such way was after graduating high school. I was able to obtain a job as a clerk in a system company that works with companies shipping containers. My first part was data entry, but I experienced a turnaround when I got a special and rare chance to have a word with my boss one on one. Our conversation was mainly about dreams and how important it was to reach them. He shared his own personal experience about achieving his dream while emphasizing to me that our dreams can be found in the different experiences we go through. After his graduation, he felt lost and did not know what he wanted to do afterwards. He tried a lot of different jobs and eventually succeeded in finding his dream. I was touched by his wish for me to find my own dream too. Thus, after this conversation I decided to visit two departments that I believed could help me in achieving my dream; accounts and customer service. I gained a lot from this experience. I was able to learn how to handle various statements and bills. Talking with customers from different parts of the world such as Hong Kong, Mainland China, and South East Asia facilitated my acquisition of better customer relationship and communication skills.

In addition to this, I have also learnt how to utilize resources in the required way and apply my economic skills in volunteer work. With my volunteer work, I have been engaged in a children care center near my campus ever since I arrived abroad for my studies. Accordingly, center is basically composed of children who have been abandoned and yet to be adopted. I usually play and read to them. The community library also stands out as my area of volunteer work besides my role at the food bank in my area where we distribute food to the homeless people.

One particular experience that is an important part of my life relates to my struggle with my relationship with my father and education. When I started my secondary education, my father became addicted to gambling. Consequently, he ended up losing a lot of money and abandoned us eventually. His abandonment made our living conditions very difficult for me and my mother. Our lives transitioned from bad to worse as my mother had to deal with everything in terms of taking care of us. This hardship forced me to grow up fast and become responsible as I strived to make a contribution to our finances. It is at this point that I decided to find a part time job as a tutor. I would teach junior students mathematics and physics. My mother has taken it upon herself to teach me about being detailed oriented and patient, the latter feature of character made her successful when she had started working as a clerk. In a span of 10 years, this ended up making her a chief accountant of her company. This lesson came in handy when I started my tutoring as it required being detailed oriented in order to be able to make appropriate teaching guides for the students I was tutoring and patient when facing their learning difficulties. This ended up being a very satisfying job not just financial but also because I found a lot of joy in helping these students improve their learning. This lesson from my mother has facilitated the good performance in my job today which has greatly impressed my boss and colleagues as a whole.

The hardship my mother and I endured after my father had left also strengthened the relationship between me and my mother so that we became a close-knit family. Apart from teaching me to become detail oriented and patient, my mother used this time also to help me cultivate an efficient financial capability. She also taught me that in order to be able to achieve anything in life one should think deep and plan their actions.

Further, I was able to eventually get an opportunity to study abroad. This further made my life difficult as studying and living abroad proved to be very challenging for me. I met a lot of difficulties and finally realized that the only way of overcoming them was becoming active in all I did. By becoming active I was able to gain a lot. I did this by participating in various activities and joining clubs. The most profound club I joined was the economics club. Here I learnt a lot about the relationship between economics and politics. This enabled me to meet many people who were willing to help me to cope with the hardships of studying and living in a foreign country. Thus, I was able to exceed myself by being active which made me feel proud of myself.
