Research objective

During the colonization period, a number of colonized countries adapted the system that their masters used. For example, the American nation constitution was drafted from the perspectives of the Britain constitution. Apart from the constitution there are a number of ways that the British systems of economy, finance, security and people welfare affected America future decision and strategies of laying out administrate and managerial posts. This research paper objective is to find out if in any way the British police system had an effect on how the American nation would approach it definition and structure of the police unit after the colonization by the British. Therefore, the research tries to evaluate if any incident or police structure of the British police had any effect on how the American structured it police force after the period of colonization. The paper revisits the scenes from the time that the British invaded America and up to the time the British left America; objective being to review if any structure used during the period were later adopted into the American police system within the period of after the British left America and up to now. In other words, the key research question is if the British colonial police system had any impact in the independent American police system.

Research sources

To conduct the research, the paper will rely on peer reviewed journals sources, books and internet based articles. The research paper will have sources ranging or with information in four scopes; situation of American police before invasion of Britain and the situation there after; relationship of British and America police during and after the colonization; similarities and differences of British and American police; evidence of American police  either using or not using the British police system model.

An educational aricle by LtCol USMC (Ret.) Assistant Professor of Criminology California State University, Stevens (2005) revisits the situation of American police before invasion of Britain and the situation there after. The article achieves it objectives by diving the police history into 8 eras, resultant from the emergent issues at the time. The article starts by revisiting the earliest era of ancient (300B.C.- 400 A.D.) and middle ages era(400A.D -1600 A.D) which relied on kin policing and tithing system respectively. The article then focuses on the other 6 eras namely; colonial era, spoils era, progressive era, gangster era, revolution era and current era. Through the scrutinization of the eras, especial the colonial era and spoils era, Stevens (2005) outlines vital details into how the British police system influenced the American police system. Fro example, Stevens (2005) explains that in the spoils era (1800A.D- 1900 A.D) “required American police to adapt to large-scale social changes”. In the mode of adapting to social changes the police system had to rely on a model that had been used elsewhere.  During the colonial era (1600 A.D. - 1800 A.D.), the American police system had to switch gears to the British system of police. Through the consequent eras,Stevens (2005) tries to establish whether the American system was further influenced by the British system after they left.

Bargainnier & Dove (1986) looks at the relationship between the structures used in the American and the British police system and how they relate to each other. Bargainnier & Dove (1986) works establishes how relevant some police post are in the modern society and their origin. At some point the book offers some light revelation into similarities and differences of British and American police, while largely scrutinizing the relevancy and reliability of some posts across the police history. Woodall (n.d.) offers an interesting debate through her article on why and how the British police system and the American police system are different. Woodall (n.d.) artticle, a modern platform for sourcing the current status or research question, offers an extensive explanation as to why the two systems of police do not match. Through the article, thus the research paper will be able to deduce if there was any influence in the American police system by the British one. This especially after considering that the article offers some brief history in the relationship between American and British police system. Monkkonen (1981) offers information about the status of the American police in colonial period and immediate post colonial period in American. The book by Monkkonen (1981) tries to justify the actions, structures, strategies and ideologies that the police used at the time and where they were derived. The book offers a rich platform for establish if there is any evidence pointing towards British police system influence on the American police system.

Conclusion

Social structures such as the police system develop as a result of emerging security issues. The police system uses an adapting system rather than and adopting system. However, as the police system tries to establish structure in relation to rising security issues, they are likely to utilize a model that has worked somewhere else. Therefore, the research will scrutinize whether at any time the American police relied on the British police system model, far long after they were gone. It is important to understand the foundation of the current American police system and how it came to being. The understanding helps in realizing if the police system is weak or strong as per the security needs. The research will, therefore, scope in to the purpose, intentions and reliability of borrowed American police slang, laws, uniform and weapons from the British system. Any evidence found from the research will be used to evaluate how positively or negatively the British police system influenced the establishment and growth of the American police system.
