The Great Dictator is an American comedy film produced by Charlie Chaplin in 1940. It about the persecution of Jews, violence and the struggle they underwent during the Second World War. War movies are tragic, full of death and sadness; The Great Dictator is a very funny film despite the circumstances of the storyline. The film is about a Jewish barber who while fighting for his nation Tomania, gets injured. He stays in a veteran’s hospital for many years and finally heads home after losing his memory. Tomania is now under Hynkel who is a dictator like Hitler. The barber does not like what is happening to Jews in the Jewish ghetto. Schultz saves the barber during an attack by storm troopers after realizing that the barber had saved him during the war. At the end of the film, the barber mistaken for Hynkle the dictator and makes a speech. The barber makes a plea for the justice, humanity and the end of the persecution of Jews.

The film is remarkable, hilarious and funny considering that it is in reference to Hitler and the Nazis persecution of the Jews. The movie relays a funny side to the atrocities that happened during the war. There are various scenes that are hilarious such as when Hannah the barber’s lover hits the storm troopers with a frying pan; Hynkle’s poor address to the Tosmanian nation and an upside own airplane. The humor in The Great Dictator makes the audience forget about the atrocities of Hitler and the Nazis. Humor is important in times of adversity. The use of humor in The Great Dictator was very effective.
